The International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed all charges of crimes against humanity against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, committing him to stand trial at The Hague.
Judges found substantial evidence linking Duterte to the deadly anti-drug campaign that resulted in thousands of extrajudicial killings during his time as mayor and president. The court also upheld its jurisdiction over the case, rejecting appeals from Duterte's legal team. This landmark decision marks the first time a former Asian head of government will face trial at the ICC for such charges.
The move is seen as a significant step toward justice for victims and accountability for state-led violence.

It’s about time leaders like Duterte are actually held accountable for their brutal policies—no one should be above the law, especially when thousands of lives are at stake. This trial is a huge win for human rights and sends a message that state violence can’t just be swept under the rug.

Honestly, I think it’s good that leaders are held accountable, but we also have to respect national sovereignty and not let outside courts get too involved in a country’s internal affairs. Duterte’s drug war was brutal, but some people in the Philippines felt it was necessary to tackle their crime problem. At the same time, thousands of extrajudicial killings can’t just be ignored either. I hope this trial actually leads to a fair examination of the facts instead of just being used for political point-scoring on either side.
